Our Latest Adventures

Image
Hi Everyone, we have continued to work and enjoy this area.  Since kids are off from school and families are on vacation, the Gift shop and tours have been busy.  On our last 3 days of work, ending this past Friday, Wendy had six tours to my five.  At the end of the day, we were hardly able to climb the 4 steps into the RV.  Instead of resting Saturday, we did something stupid but more on that later. Since we have been trying to take advantage of the "no sales tax" of Oregon, we ordered and have received the much wanted scope and tripod for our nature trips.  We are very happy with its performance and abilities.  We took it for a test drive to the previously visited Elk Ranch just a few miles out of Reedsport.  What do you think? As you can see, all of these were taken with an iPhone attached to the scope.  We still need additional testing and work to get used to the magnification of the scope as well as those of the phone,

Clamming trip and more

Hello again!   We have not blogged in a while but we didn't have too much to report on.    We have a couple of things to blog about now. I had the opportunity to go "clamming" for the first time.   We met at 5:00 in the morning, with temperature in low 50s.    I went with Ray, the volunteer coordinator, and seasoned commercial fisherman from Alaska, age 76.   Another volunteer, Bill, joined us, at the last minute.   Bill and I had to purchase a temporary license, that is for clamming and crabbing.   Unfortunately, none of us took any pictures, so bear with me while I tell you the story, including the entertaining details.    I will attempt to paint a picture. We put in our boat (See Ray's boat below), at the Charleston Harbor dock, SE of us.   "Insert picture here" (use your imagination): Ray is wearing full overall waders, I'm wearing hip boots, and Bill, the late unprepared arrival is wearing sneakers.   We went across the Bar (t

4th of July and Eel Lake

It's us again!   We had an excellent July 4th celebration.   All of the volunteer couples (5) got together to barbecue that evening.   The family of our volunteer coordinator couple came as well.   There was an overabundance of food.   No one was complaining!   One of the volunteers brought the bubbles.   That is an understatement.   It came in a 5 gallon bucket, with a homemade bubble delivery system!   See pics below.    After we ate, we sat around a gas operated fire pit and chatted for the rest of the evening. There was a fireworks show later on, in Winchester Bay.  We were able to view it from our trailer window.  The wind cooperated with us, and we were able to go kayaking at Tugman State Park yesterday.  This park is just under 5 miles from us.  The lake is tranquil and beautiful.  The water was so clear!  As you can see in pics below, we were fortunate enough to visit with 2 bald eagles.     Soon after ta

California Redwoods

Hi everyone Since our last postings, we had 3 great busy days at work.   Traffic and sales in the gift shop as well as tours have increased.   Schools are finally out for the summer in the area and there is no doubt families are on vacation. On our first day off, we had plans and hotel reservations for one night in Crescent City, California.   (Feel free to pronounce the state as previous governor and actor, Arnold S. would have said it).   It was our 41st anniversary celebration gift to see the giant Redwoods.   Being only 160 miles away, we had to go into CA and Redwood National Park .   One of best treat of this trip, was the drive there via HWY 101 the "Oregon Coast Scenic Byway" and in CA it is referred to as the "Pacific Coast Scenic Byway".   Here are some of our favorite spots along the way: We went directly to the Park HQ Visitor Center.   We received great information about the park, how best to view it and a map with drawings
