Estes Park, The Town

Image
Hello Everyone After much work to remove the snow from our truck, we just had to leave our RV and do a little exploring.  Off to town we went.     It is just a 5 mile drive into Estes Park.  A beautiful town nestled in the mountains providing among many things, the routes leading into the entrances to Rocky Mountain National Park.  Incidentally, closed today due to weather.  So was the visitor center. Notice the 5 & 10 store in the left.  This street ends ahead downtown Driving through town, we were surprised to see all the crowds walking into all the shops downtown.  We found movie theaters and restaurants that will need to be visited.  There is also a Safeway Supermarket.  It is one of two places to shop for groceries for many miles. The other is a local store.  We enjoyed the Safeway parking lot that had their trees main trunks covered by colorful knitted material.  Enlarge p...

Estes Park, Colorado Trip 2017

Hi everyone! Sorry we have not been reporting our adventures since the big Alaska Trip of last year.  Since we have been volunteering and has been more of a "working adventure" than all pleasure, we didn't have the opportunity to blog about it. So, as you all know we spent the 2016 - 2017 winter in south, south Texas.  We volunteered for U.S. Fish and Wildlife department in Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge.  A great experience in every aspect.  We enjoyed it so much, so much so, that we decided that work/volunteer camping is for us!. Christine - Volunteer Coordinator Jim - IT Mgr Altamira Oriole Bobcat   Green Jay As usual, Mother Nature continues to show that she is a force to be reckoned with.  We left home and drove to Wilson Lake, Kansas.  An Army Corp of Engineer (ACE) campground on the north edge of said lake.  A beautiful, quiet park but it had some hidden features that showed themselves later that night. ...

Trip Home

Well, like the old saying goes, “all good things must come to an end”, so has this wonderful trip / adventure to Alaska. After Rapid City, SD and Custer State Park, we continued our trek home.    Drove through the outskirts of the Badlands of SD.  We made a side trip into Sioux Falls, SD.  We visited Blue Beacon truck and RV wash.  We had both RVs and tow vehicles professionally washed and scrubbed.  We left there very pleased on how both our vehicles looked and shined.  We just kept praying it would not rain. Spent one night in Plankinton and last night we spend it in Onawa, IA.   We said good bye to our friends Claude, Bobbi and their dog, Squeaker, who came to meet us at Glacier National Park.  We hope to be seeing them again later this winter in Texas. Since it was only 400 miles and a 6 hour ride, we decided to attempt the drive without stopping anywhere for the night...

Buffalo WY - Custer SD

Buffalo, WY (7/24/2016) Wild Turkey & Chicks Deer & Horses Pronghorns On our last evening in Buffalo, we visited the Occidental Hotel in town.  As far back as 1880, it had developed a reputation as the best place to stay.  Many famous people stayed here including:  Buffalo Bill Cody, Teddy Roosevelt, Tom Horn, Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid and Calamity Jane. The hotel, included in the novel “The Virginian”;  posted the first famous shoot-out of the novel and it took place outside the Occidental Hotel.  The saloon is exactly the way it looked over 100 years ago.  Walking the halls and lobby of the hotel, one can smell the old wooden features of the hotel and experience the creaking floors as well.  They still had the original kitchen with “ice box” and tea room.     Rapid City, SD 7/25/201...
