Winchester Bay, OR
We finally made our destination by 12 noon local time.
First, we need to comment on "what a difference a day makes". Eastern Oregon is certainly nothing like the central and coastal topography. As we got closer to the mountains of the Cascade Range, the thicker the foliage and more beautiful our surroundings became. Additionally, the temperature dropped from 37 degrees to 30!
In reference to the
mountain peaks posted yesterday; we were not sure and did not want to post
false information. As a result we left
the names out. These were in fact Mt.
Hood, Powder & Wolf mountains as presented left to right.
Today we got pretty
close to Mt. Washington:
The route taken,
could not have been more beautiful. Glad
we were forced to take the smaller state roads to reach the coast avoiding the
interstate. These were winding through the
mountains, rewarding us on every turn.
Many lakes and rivers accompanied us for most of the drive through
Willamette National Forest. We even came
across this covered bridge called "Good Pasture" in Walterville, OR.
The
approach to Winchester Bay, was through Salmon Harbor. We will post pics of the harbor at a future
date.
We were pleasantly
surprised to see the privacy and view from our campsite. Our trailer is parallel to the coastline, 110
feet above the water. Some of these
pictures were taken from the porch right outside our trailer door. Directly beyond the
dunes, is the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and Umpqua River. You will notice the Coast Guard tower. It monitors boating traffic, in and out of
the harbor. We witnessed a Coast Guard
helicopter hovering in training. We
understand from a fellow volunteer that a training rescue of a "victim' in
the water, is almost a daily occurrence.
We have been bird
watching since we got here. We have seen
a new (for us) species of hummingbirds: Rufous
Hummingbird. We've also seen some
old friends like the Stellar Jays as seen below. We
live amongst them, they are everywhere!
Our bird feeder is now in use.
We begin our volunteer Lighthouse tour guide training today...
Beautiful and very picturesque. I'd love to drive the Charger down that stretch of road.
