Valdez – Day 2

Worked on cleaning or washing our rig today.  Since Toad RV Park in BC, none of the RV parks since then have allowed washing on site.  We tried using pressure wash at a car wash but without soap and a brush with good elbow grease, there was no way to remove the dirt and grime from those four wheeling days.

Luckily this park not only allows it, they even encouraged me to do it.  Incidentally, this park is for adults only; in a quiet dead end cove.  No need to tell me twice.  First thing this morning with 58° F outside, it was time.  2.5 hours later, both towing vehicle and trailer got their due.

After a hot shower and lunch, we explored town a bit.  We visited the site of the Old Town ofValdez.  After the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 that devastated Valdez, the remaining buildings were condemned, destroyed or moved 4 miles further south where it stands today.  The old site has been overrun by grass and weeds.  However, flags and markers now stand where old buildings once did.

Also visited the Overlook Trail and pavilion that is high on a hill overlooking the Bay (and part of town).

Lastly, a tid-bit.  Perhaps someone can explain why fuel is so expensive in this town.  Valdez is the end of the line for the 800 mile Alaska Pipe Line.  There are storage tanks everywhere and processing plants and they have got the gall to charge $3.13/gal of diesel.  There are only 2 gas stations in town and needless to say there is no competition.  We have been able to refuel everywhere else in AK so far for $2.49/gal.  This is frustrating.
Another item that is expensive in AK, is food.  There are several of the same supermarkets up here but their prices are no comparison as seen in the lower 48.  Here in Valdez there is only a Safeway.  ½ gallon of Milk is over $5 and butter is well over $4.

We also find this interesting.  This town is being overrun by rabbits.  They can be found everywhere

At 1pm today, notice the low tide behind us

It is now 5pm.  Tide is in!!! (angles a bit different due to current raining.  Took shot from within RV)

We will be staying in Valdez until Friday.

  1. love the before and after tide pictures.....actually all your photos have been top notch quality on this trip. Those rabbits certainly look and act like they have no predators to be concerned about. Wonder why? The eagles and hawks must have plenty of other things to eat. Do the locals hunt rabbits?
Enjoy your stay in Valdez, a break from driving especially after the last horrible road, is in order.
    love you!

  2. Prices are high because you are at the end of the 4,000 mile supply depot. Everything is shipped in except rabbit meat. (:>)
