Yellowstone National Park

Sunday May 8th, 2016

The entire drive in Wyoming is beautiful.  The interesting part for us was seeing Pronghorns throughout the drive right next to the interstate.  This made the drive interesting since it kept us busy looking for herds on both sides of the road.  We also saw 3 elk, hanging out with a herd of cows!

We arrived late in the afternoon in Jackson Hole, WY a beautiful city in a valley.  We stayed at the Virginian RV Park, located in town surrounded by mountains with great views all around.  The late arrival was due to weather and strong winds in Rawlins, WY.  These were steady at 25 mph and gusting to 43 mph.  When the opportunity presented itself around 10:40am, we broke camp and headed west with a tail-wind helping a bit.

The ride from Jackson WY to West Yellowstone MT, was beautiful.  With 10% incline and another 10% on the downward side; crossing the Tetons Mountains was a white-knuckle ride.  The views were incredible across this mountain pass.

We finally made it to West Yellowstone.  An interesting western town with Grizzly RV Park (a Good Sam park), in the middle of town.  This park is huge and has no bad views.  It is well kept but WiFi is a joke.  Why they advertise having WiFi is beyond us and the park staff.

After the long drive picking up every bug across several states, road grime and mud from the rains in Eastern Wyoming, it was time to clean up a bit.

Monday morning was exploration time.  The entrance to Yellowstone National Park is just one mile east of the town of West Yellowstone.  Soon, past the entrance to the park, we enter back into the North Western corner of Wyoming.  Our immediate desire was to see “Old Faithful”.  The 30 miles drive to the visitor center was outstanding.  We saw elk, and bison.

Along the route, we stopped to see many geysers of varying sizes.  From boiling brooks, to bubbling “paint”.  Finally, Old Faithful.  For many years we both have seen many reports and documentaries about this natural wonder.  Seeing it in person made us realize that those pictures do not do it justice.  It is very hard in-deed to capture one of nature’s many secrets.
