Iskut, BC (7/8/2016)
Left this morning at our usual
time. The drive on The Cassiar, Hwy 37,
was technically challenging, beautiful and well described on the
“Milepost”. This is your typical country
road. It was initially a logging road
that has been expanded and opened to the public. It is narrow with no guard rails, no divider
and no shoulders. And, to make it a bit
nervier, there is no cell service at all.
A mechanical break down here, requires limping to the next available
turnoff to keep road open. All this
aside, it is a beautiful ride thru the Cassiar Mountains. We had the Spectrum Range to our West and to
our East, the Stikine Range, of the Skeena Mountains.

There is still evidence of the
forest wildfires of 2010 & 2012.
Started by lightning, it burned over 30,000 Hectares and closed The
Cassiar for several days.
We stopped for lunch on one of
the turn-outs overlooking Dease Lake.
Shortly after lunch, we came
across these two foxes walking on the highway.
The final treat, this gorgeous RV
Park. We can now understand the name Mountain
Shadow RV Park. “A Slice of Heaven in the Wilderness”; as
stated in their Milepost Ad. It sits at
the foot or shadow of Mount Edziza, a dormant volcano (elev. 9,143 ft.) It contains glaciers, cinder cones, craters
& lava flows. A resident young
golden eagle welcomed us by flying in circles and screaming letting us know
this was his domain.
After setting up camp, a short
hike to the lake was welcomed exercise and found the young eagle perched on top
of a pine tree. He also has 3 eagle
friends that are always in nearby trees.
While taking our walk after
dinner, we discovered that the group of folks we mentioned in yesterday’s blog,
is also here at Mountain Shadow. (They
will also be going to Stewart tomorrow, to the same campground).
This “slice of heaven” 235 acres
total, including the RV Park and log home, are for sale in case anyone is
interested in making an offer. I wish I
could!!!!
So pretty!
