Watson Lake

Watson Lake, Yukon Territory (7/7/2016)

We had a short ride today.  Less than 3 1/2 hours.  The ride had more drama than yesterday’s.  We came across three extensive construction areas that were gravel and dust for miles.  If you don’t know what a Haboob is, it’s a desert dust storm!  Closing your windows and vents can’t keep it out of your car.  The dust was so thick at times that it was difficult to see.  The construction vehicles spray water to keep the dust down, but it was not applied today.  The advantage is that you don’t have a dust-up, but the disadvantage is that you get covered in mud! (Calcium Chloride).  Yesterday we were covered with mud.  Today, we received a nice dose of dust over the mud to enhance our appearance.

During one of the quiet sections of road, we were fortunate enough to see a black bear!  It was about to head onto the highway, but an RV heading in the opposite direction from us, discouraged it from crossing.
We watched many, many RVs making the trek up into Alaska.  It’s not an overestimate to say that 98% of the vehicles heading North, were RVs of every style and size.

We headed straight to the RV wash when we got into our campground.  At least you can see the paint on the truck and trailer!

Another beautiful campground, with a setting in the trees.

We came across a group of fellow travelers here, that we have been traveling on and off with since Whitehorse on the way up to Alaska!
No cell phone service in this area, and the Wi-Fi signal is extremely weak and sporadic.

We will head down the Cassiar Hwy (37) tomorrow, and this will lead us into uncharted territory!

First stop will be Iskut, BC.

  1. Your frequent use of the term "fellow travelers" is starting to make me wonder about you! A Bernie supporter?! Or is that too much to the right for you?
Yikes, Haboob sounds as bad as it is. Reminds me of those dust storms in Arizona.
    love you,
