Lakes and Rocky Mountains

We went for our first kayaking adventure this week, at Estes Lake.    Beautiful trip, with elk eating along the lake.  We watched those elk jump over the dam fence, to access the lake!  It was quite breezy while we kayaked our way down the lake.  A little disappointed that there is a day fee to get onto the lake and a fee for a permit for each kayak. As we were turning back, we noticed dark clouds making an appearance.  As we approached the marina, the thunder boomers began!  We got out of the lake just in time.

The rain began in earnest, as we drove away from the lake.  When we returned to our trailer, we had another new weather experience.  Hail!  Marble sized, coming fast and furious.  Lasted much longer than we could hold our breaths. Very concerned about possible damage to truck and trailer.  When it ended, we went to check, and our vehicles were fine.

We took a ride to Wild Basin, after work on Wednesday.  We were in search of another potential lake for us to kayak.  We struck out.  The lakes there, are too small and shallow.  But we were rewarded with a beautiful mountain road, with twists and turns, complete with wild river views.  The road was pretty narrow, winding through cabins and a campground.  It was a little harrowing in places, making room for oncoming vehicles.

Yesterday, we had a really fun day at Rocky Mountain NP.  We went on the Bear Lake route, which is one that we haven't seen before. We stopped at Sprague Lake along the way.  We hiked around the lake and saw many beautiful birds.  Good place for a picnic later on.

We continued on our way to Bear Lake.  The view was spectacular as we climbed the mountain.  Plenty of snow on the mountains, as you can see!  During the last snow fall, according to a Park Ranger, 55 inches had fallen.  We decided to hike around that lake as well, and we were not sorry we did.  Each turn on the path showed a different view of the surrounding mountains.  When we got halfway through the hike, we realized that the second part was SNOW COVERED!  We had hiking boots on, but we were both wearing shorts.  At least one person we came across was wearing sandals.  We knew that our adventure was still getting more interesting!

As usual, our campground has been a source of entertainment.  Mule deer and elk, continue to eat, and travel through.  Another cabin on wheels appeared a couple of days ago.

We went for dinner at the River Walk earlier this week.  We have been noticing that the level of the Big Thompson River has really increased.  In some places it has gone over its banks.  The snow melt at this time of year, compounded by consistent heavy rain, has contributed to this condition.

We have been enjoying our jobs.  We worked today and will work tomorrow, just in the morning.  We have a busy work schedule next week. Included in our photo shoots are 2 family reunions with 97 and 110 family members.

As usual, we'll keep you posted!
