West Glacier, MT – Day 3

Yesterday we drove to Kalispell, MT.  a 30 mile ride.  Beautiful backroads and country views.  We shopped at Wal-Mart and Smiths (a Kroger family store).  One of us even visited Cost Cutters.

Woke up to a wonderful 52° F this morning.  Clear blue skies and a great day to kayak.  Unfortunately, it did not take long for the temperature to rise and soon it was hot.  Considering it only got to be the high of 76 F, we should not complain yet.  The temps awaiting us in Missouri have been close and over the triple digits already.  Something we are not looking forward to. 

Lake Five is just down the road from our campground.  A beautiful lake with clear water and several private homes; one Lodge and RV resort, all surrounded by mountains.















While paddling in the water, met a couple in a canoe.  They are residents that live here during the summer.  They are Canadians from British Columbia although she was born and raised in California.  He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY.  We sat in our boats next to each other for about 30 minutes chatting.  The light breeze kept pushing us from one side to the other.  We just kept talking.  A very interesting couple and a very pleasant time was had.

We continued exploring the lake and we all went in different directions.  By this time the sun was starting to warm things up and felt jealous watching the kids swimming near their homes.  The water was chilly and not sure how it would feel after a few seconds being immersed in it.

Spent the afternoon sitting around relaxing, planning and making reservations for the next few stops that would eventually take us to South Dakota and the Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore.


Tomorrow we drive to Great Falls, MT.

Worked on cleaning or washing our rig today.  Since Toad RV Park in BC, none of the RV parks since then have allowed washing on site.  We tried using pressure wash at a car wash but without soap and a brush with good elbow grease, there was no way to remove the dirt and grime from those four wheeling days. Luckily this park not only allows it, they even encouraged me to do it.  Incidentally, this park is for adults only; in a quiet dead end cove.  No need to tell me twice.  First thing this morning with 58° F outside, it was time.  2.5 hours later, both towing vehicle and trailer got their due.  After a hot shower and lunch, we explored town a bit.  We visited the site of the Old Town ofValdez.  After the Good Friday Earthquake of 1964 that devastated Valdez, the remaining buildings were condemned, destroyed or moved 4 miles further south where it stands today.  The old site has been overrun by grass and weeds.  How...

Buenos Aires NWR First a little history of this area, the following is a summary, directly from the Buenos Aires website: In the 1800's, the Altar Valley was an open grassland teeming with large herds of pronghorn. Masked bobwhite quail calls filled the early morning summer air. The grasslands blanketed the landscape, uninterrupted as far as the eye could see. Pedro Aguirre, Jr. came to this location and started a stagecoach and freight line that would connect Tucson and the mining towns of Arivaca, Arizona, and the town of Altar in Sonora, Mexico. He built a homestead here in 1864 and named it Buenos Ayres, or "good air," because of the constant winds found there.   Aguirre was the first person to develop artificial sources. He began by constructing a large reservoir near the head of the watershed at the confluence of the Lopez and Compartidero washes. The Sonoran Outpost

“The Sonoran Outpost” Just a few pictures to show you the neighborhood in which we live.   Yes, it’s a compound, surrounded by a chain link fence, topped with razor wire.   An electric gate allows access for us.     We call it, home!   You can see our truck, marking our site. Baboquivari Mountains Home! In addition to the volunteer RVs, there are several mobile trailers here.  One of them is called the Community Center.  We use it for our twice monthly Volunteer Potluck dinners, and it contains the laundry room as well. The other trailers are temporary housing, for staff biologists and wildlife specialists.
